Crete is the largest island in Greece and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean. It is situated at the southern extreme of Europe, with a length of approximately 260 km and an average breadth of about 60 km. The total area covers about 8.260 km, with a population of 600.000. The capital of Crete is Iraklion, with a population of 180.000. Other important cities of the island are Hania, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos and Ierapetra on the south coast.
